The third edition of the voestalpine cares run, the steel and technology group’s global exercise initiative, was once again a great success this year. Under the motto “Running together for a good cause,” employees worldwide were once again able to collect more than 1.1 million kilometers of “cares” in just under three months by running, walking, hiking, wheelchair riding, or hand biking. These “cares” were converted by voestalpine into donations for charitable purposes. Donations totaling EUR 700,000 were handed over to Doctors Without Borders, Hilfswerk International, the Austrian Red Cross, and UNICEF Austria for chosen national and international aid projects. For the first time, the voestalpine cares run was awarded first prize in the “Large Companies” category by “Wirtschaft hilft.”

This year, around 7,300 employees from over 40 countries participated in the voestalpine cares run, collectively running more than 1.1 million kilometers—equivalent to 25 laps around the Earth—and making a valuable contribution toward a better world.

By taking part in the voestalpine cares run, our employees around the world not only did something good for their health, but have also set an example to others. I am especially pleased that, thanks to their tremendous commitment, we were once again able to reach the maximum donation amount of EUR 700,000 for international aid projects.

Once again this year, voestalpine is using the funds raised to support the following aid projects led by UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, Hilfswerk International, and the Austrian Red Cross:

  • Study centers & learning support—Austrian Red Cross: With 160 locations across Austria, the program provides children and young people with free sessions at learning centers and school sites.
  • “Help Points” by Hilfswerk International provide easy-to-access, immediate assistance to residents in war-affected regions of Ukraine in the form of food, everyday necessities, as well as psychosocial support and counseling.
  • Future opportunities for teens in Brazil: Through the “1 Million Opportunities” initiative, UNICEF is providing young people in Brazil with access to quality education.
  • Education and digital learning centers in Ukraine—UNICEF has established 50 Digital Learning Centers equipped with laptops and tablets, providing safe learning opportunities in war-affected areas of Ukraine.
  • Emergency disaster relief RISK kits—Doctors Without Borders: To enable rapid emergency response, Doctors Without Borders can use Rapid Intervention Surgical kits (RISK kits) to set up modular “mini operating rooms” even in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Toyota Land Cruiser—Doctors Without Borders uses specially equipped Toyota Land Cruisers, fitted with radio and protective gear, to reach affected areas facing conflict, food crises, or water shortages for medical emergencies.

In June 2025, the voestalpine cares run was awarded first place in the “Large Companies” category by “Wirtschaft hilft,” the fundraising association of Austria, for the first time.
